Every oth­er year since 1999, the Home Improve­ment Research Insti­tute has sur­veyed home improve­ment remod­el­ers and spe­cial­ty con­trac­tors to track crit­i­cal prod­uct and chan­nel activ­i­ties. This report out­lines the prod­uct pur­chas­es of pro­fes­sion­al con­trac­tors in over 11 prod­uct cat­e­gories includ­ing Build­ing Mate­ri­als, Doors, Win­dows or Oth­er Mill­work, Electrical/​Lighting Prod­ucts, Floor, Wall and Ceil­ing Fin­ish Prod­ucts, Hand/​Power Tools, Hard­ware, Kitchen/​Bath Items (includ­ing appli­ances), Land­scap­ing Sup­plies or Equip­ment, Paint, Stains, Fin­ish­es, Adhe­sives and Paint­ing Acces­sories, Roof­ing, Sid­ing or Insu­la­tion and Rough Plumb­ing and HVAC equipment.

The objec­tives of this study are to:

  • Exam­ine the pur­chas­ing behav­ior and pref­er­ences of con­trac­tors across var­i­ous prod­uct categories.
  • Iden­ti­fy key fac­tors dri­ving prod­uct selec­tion and brand loy­al­ty among contractors.
  • Ana­lyze the role of dif­fer­ent pur­chas­ing chan­nels in con­trac­tors’ buy­ing behavior.
  • Assess the impact of demo­graph­ic and busi­ness char­ac­ter­is­tics on con­trac­tors’ pur­chas­ing decisions.
  • Eval­u­ate changes in con­trac­tor pur­chas­ing behav­ior over time and iden­ti­fy emerg­ing trends.
