The attraction of social media can be explained in a couple ways. One, it’s free. Just sign up for an account and start tweeting about your products and services. Two, millions of existing or potential customers are following along.
As more companies are looking to benefit from that one-two punch, the Home Improvement Research Institute is taking a deeper dive into various sources for trends and insights generated by social media activity. HIRI recently announced that it is providing quarterly social media reports for its members.
With the help of research partner Sysomos, HIRI’s reports track home improvement trends in the digital world by monitoring and measuring interest levels in home improvement projects and identifying trends within those projects on social media.
Trends in social media are tracked in a number of ways — Google search trends, Twitter, news, blogs and forums.
Ten categories in focus are bath remodel, kitchen remodel, painting, flooring, gardening & landscaping, roofing & siding, windows & doors, home automation & smart home, plumbing, and patio & deck.
Highlights from HIRI’s study on bathroom remodeling are on the opposite page. One takeaway: Social media interest in “bath accessories” far outpaces interest in “bath removal,” “bath counters, “bath cabinets” or other components of a bathroom remodel.
